Llama Fight! is a 1v1 fighting game where you face your friends in
combat as the most ruthless animal on Earth: the llama!
While llamas are widely known as funny and strange creatures,
in reality they are also very hardy and violent, with physical
conflict being at the base of their social structure. This humorous
take on a fighting game centers the entire combat system around the
fighting style of llamas, translating the actual nature and behaviours
of the animal to game mechanics.
Fights between llamas are centered around throwing the adversary off
their balance through kicking and headbutting. They are also known to spit,
and the spit content can change depending on their aggression.
These formed the basis for the player’s attacks, which consist of headbutts
(light attack), kicks (heavy attack), and spit (charged attack).
This was a short class assignment, and I was paired up with another designer. I laid out the base concept, then we worked together to expand it.
Balance in Llama Fight! serves both as a damage meter and multiplier:
a player loses when their balance reaches 0%, but will also be more
vulnerable to attacks as it decreases. Unlike health, balance isn’t a hard-set,
tangible amount, and so it can be recovered almost instantaneously.
After a hit, the player can mash a button or attack their opponent
back (revenge) to regain some balance.
