AlienWhaleProject is a point-and-click game where you operate on an alien creature to try and save its life.
The player is faced with the unclear biology of an alien creature and must
rely on their deductive skills to accurately reconstruct its body, by
correctly placing the given organs and removing only the truly foreign bodies
without further damaging the alien.
The game’s conflict is based on the mysterious nature of the Creature.
Every aspect of the Creature was designed with a specific function and
behaviour, but these facts are not directly revealed to the player.
Instead, all of the relevant information is conveyed by the 3D models,
the detailed descriptions, the placement of the organ slots inside the
Creature, and the feedback received after each operation. The player must
examine these elements to gather some understanding of the Creature’s
biology and logically combine them into educated guesses.
The main themes of the game are the unnerving sensation of facing the unknown and the fear of failure under pressure. To this purpose, the atmosphere is suffocating and dark: every description is long, detailed, and graphic, and every sound is fleshy and grim. The operation is limited by a steadily-decreasing timer, and the feedbacks, while numerous, may initially appear cryptic. The organs themselves were purposefully modelled to appear rough and ambiguous, and every choice the player makes is motivated mostly by a gut feeling.
